7 of Europe’s most romantic places

There’s something about Europe that lends itself to romance. Perhaps it’s the old-world charm of cobblestone streets, the serene beauty of turquoise waters, or the way each destination seems tailor-made for two. While many might think of Paris or Venice first when thinking of romantic getaways, this list skips those obvious choices and heads instead to seven truly special places, each with its own unique allure. My recommendations don’t just set the stage for romance -– they are the story. From sparkling lakes to sun-kissed islands, here’s where to whisk your partner away for an unforgettable romantic escape.

Those 7 ‘oh-so-romantic’ places

1 | Santorini, Greece

The impossibly blue mediterranean at the foot of Santorini

If ever there was a place designed for romance, it’s Santorini. Perched high above the deep blue Aegean Sea, its whitewashed villages and iconic blue domes are just breathtaking. There’s no better way to start your evening than watching the sunset over the caldera – Oia is famed for this, and it’s worth staking out a good spot early. But for something more intimate, why not book a private dinner on a cliffside terrace? Or take to the water for a sunset cruise. With its luxurious boutique hotels, infinity pools, and panoramic views, Santorini feels like a dream you’ll never want to wake up from.

2 | Lake Bled, Slovenia

One of the most magical places on earth

Tucked away in the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is like stepping straight into a storybook. Its emerald-green waters are dotted with swans, and right in the middle lies a tiny island topped with an iconic church. Tradition has it that ringing the church bell will bring good fortune – and perhaps grant a romantic wish or two. The easiest way to get there is by pletna boat, a wooden gondola-like vessel rowed by a local boatman. Back on shore, take a leisurely stroll around the lake or hike up to Bled Castle for unbeatable views. Don’t leave without sharing a slice of the famous Bled cream cake – it’s indulgent, delicious, and perfect for two spoons.

3 | The Amalfi Coast, Italy

View from Ravello

The Amalfi Coast is romance in technicolour. Pastel-hued towns like Positano and Ravello spill down the cliffs toward the Mediterranean, creating a backdrop that feels straight out of a postcard (or a 1950s Italian romance movie). Wander hand-in-hand through the lemon-scented streets, or rent a small boat and discover hidden coves along the coastline. For a truly unforgettable experience, book a table at a restaurant overlooking the sea and savour fresh seafood paired with local wine. Time moves a little slower here, leaving you free to soak in the beauty of it all.

4 | Colmar, France

Yes, this is a real street in a real town…

Colmar is the kind of place that feels almost too pretty to be real. Known as “Little Venice,” this Alsatian town is a maze of cobblestone streets, canals, and colourful half-timbered houses. It’s an enchanting spot to get lost with someone you love (in winter as well as in summer). Spend your day wandering between charming boutiques, stopping for coffee at a pavement café, or taking a lazy boat ride along the canals. The region is also famous for its wines, so be sure to sign up for a cosy wine tasting at a local cellar. There’s something irresistibly romantic about clinking glasses while surrounded by rolling vineyards.

5 | Seville, Spain

Winter time in Seville and the oranges!

Few places evoke passion quite like Seville and it is rapidly becoming my favourite European city! The Andalusian capital is a heady mix of flamenco, orange blossoms, and gilded palaces. Start your day with a stroll through the lush, shaded gardens of Maria Luisa Park, then hop on a horse-drawn carriage to see the city at a relaxed pace. In the evening, climb the Metropol Parasol for sweeping views as the sun sets over the rooftops. And of course, you can’t leave without experiencing flamenco – Seville is its birthplace, after all. Sit shoulder-to-shoulder in an intimate tablao, and let the fiery music and dance sweep you both off your feet.

6 | The Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Incredible landscapes in Portree

For couples who find romance in wild landscapes and peaceful seclusion (and in contrast to the warmer recommendations on this list, don’t mind a little freshness and some ‘weather’) the Scottish Highlands are an unforgettable choice. Here, the scenery is rugged and untamed, with mist-shrouded mountains, sparkling lochs, and sweeping glens. Stay in a snug stone cottage or even a castle hotel, where you can cosy up by the fire after a day of exploring. Visit iconic spots like Glencoe or Loch Ness, or head off the beaten path to discover hidden trails and deserted beaches. By night, the dark skies come alive with stars – a perfect opportunity for some stargazing together.

7 | Lake Como, Italy

Hard to beat the relaxed vibe of Lake Como

Lake Como is synonymous with romance and has featured in so many iconic movies (Casino Royale, Ocean’s Twelve and The Other Man to name but three). Its shimmering waters are framed by dramatic mountains and elegant villas, making it a favourite retreat for couples (and the occasional Hollywood star). The best way to soak it all in is by boat, whether you hire your own or join a leisurely cruise. Stop off at charming lakeside villages like Bellagio or Varenna, where you can wander cobbled streets, browse local boutiques, and enjoy gelato by the water. Don’t miss the gardens of Villa Balbianello – lush, serene, and utterly picturesque. It’s the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left.

Why Europe is perfect for romance

Europe has an undeniable allure when it comes to romance. Each destination is like a love story waiting to be discovered, with its own unique character and charm. From the sunlit terraces of Santorini to the misty glens of the Scottish Highlands, Europe offers moments that feel like they belong in a film. It’s in the gentle lapping of Lake Como’s waters, the scent of orange blossoms in Seville, and the soft glow of candlelight on the Amalfi Coast. Whether you’re strolling hand-in-hand through Colmar’s canals or sharing a quiet moment overlooking Lake Bled, Europe doesn’t just set the scene for romance – it becomes a part of the love you share. This continent is a patchwork of places where time seems to pause, letting you revel in the beauty of togetherness. It’s no wonder couples return here, again and again, to celebrate love in all its forms.
